Internet Blog Serial Number

Though weblogs are the perfect example of periodical publications, in many countries they are not liable for ISSN codes. After the Spanish standards organisation denied an ISSN request, a group of bloggers created the IBSN, the Internet Blog Serial Number.

In a short time an IBSN wiki was created and of course there is an IBSN weblog. And finally a handy PHP scripter created a tool to manage all IBSN numbers.

Since a support their cause and because you can never have enough buttons and banners on your weblog, I requested an 'official' IBSN code for Brain Tags:

IBSN: Internet Blog Serial Number 9-9999-999-88

Alas, the website is down at the moment. Does it matter how many numbers you choose and how many dashes? Looking at the searchresults before the blog went down, it was quite random what people had picked...

The site seems to be up again...

You can choose your own 10-digit number as long as it is still free. If the number is already used, the script will automatically show you the next free number.

To make the IBSN look just like an ISSN, you'll have to add three decorative dashes at any place you like.
